Signalment: 8 years old, Male Castrated, Cavalier King Charles
Presenting Complaint: Oliver was in respiratory distress upon presentation. He had an increased respiration rate (55 bpm), and was wheezing and coughing. Oliver was tachycardic (160 bpm), had weak femoral pulses and no jugular pulse. He also presented with a temperature of 41.
Presenting History
Oliver had been diagnosed with a grade V/VI heart murmur on the left side (mitral valve disease) in 2005. Auscultation of his lungs revealed marked upper respiratory noise, the presence of an expiratory wheeze, and inspiratory crackles over the right lung. He also has a history of small airway disease. The laboured respiration began a week prior to presentation and has been worsening, and has not been responsive to furosemide.
