Signalment: 8 years old, Male, Doberman Pinscher


Presenting Complaint: An 8 year old male red Doberman presented to the emergency service following an acute history of coughing and one episode of collapse.


Presenting History

On physical exam, he was bright, alert, and responsive. His mucus membranes and capillary refill time were normal. Auscultation revealed a grade 2/6 left apex systolic murmur, a gallop, and a fast irregular rhythm. Lung sounds were increased, but no crackles or wheezes were heard. His femoral pulses were weak, with pulse deficits. Pulse oximetry (98%) and blood pressure (156/111) were normal. An ECG revealed atrial fibrillation with a ventricular rate of 250 bpm.
